Background of the Study
Pesticide use in agriculture has been a common practice to protect crops from pests and increase yields, especially in developing countries like Nigeria (Oluwaseun & Musa, 2024). However, prolonged exposure to pesticides can pose serious health risks to farmers. In Jigawa State, a significant proportion of the population is engaged in farming, and the use of chemical pesticides is widespread (Khamis et al., 2023). While pesticides help control crop pests, their improper use or overexposure can lead to acute and chronic health issues such as respiratory problems, skin disorders, neurological damage, and even cancer (Olayemi et al., 2024).
Farmers in Jigawa State often work in conditions where protective equipment is unavailable, and the application of pesticides is not always conducted according to safety guidelines (Abubakar & Abdullahi, 2025). These factors contribute to the high incidence of pesticide-related health problems among agricultural workers. Pesticide exposure can occur through inhalation, skin absorption, or ingestion, especially when farmers do not observe proper handling and storage protocols. The impact of pesticide exposure on farmers' health in Jigawa State has yet to be comprehensively studied, and understanding the extent of this impact is essential for improving farm safety and public health policies.
This study seeks to investigate the effect of pesticide exposure on the health of farmers in Jigawa State, examining the types of health conditions most commonly reported by farmers and the factors contributing to pesticide exposure.
Statement of the Problem
The extensive use of pesticides in agriculture in Jigawa State has raised concerns about the health risks faced by farmers, particularly due to the lack of safety measures and protective gear. Despite the known dangers of pesticide exposure, there is limited research on the extent of its impact on farmers' health in the region. This gap in knowledge makes it difficult to implement effective policies and interventions to protect farmers.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on farmers in rural and peri-urban areas of Jigawa State who are exposed to pesticides. Data will be collected through surveys, health assessments, and interviews with farmers. Limitations include potential underreporting of health conditions and the difficulty in measuring long-term health impacts from pesticide exposure.
